Tianmen Mountain

A cable car from the city, cliff walkways and the stairs to Heaven's Gate

Stone stairways climbing toward Tianmen Cave between steep mountain cliffs

Why it's worth the trip

Stand at the foot of the long stairway and look up. It climbs straight at a hole in the mountain, with sky showing through. Tianmen Cave is a natural arch 131.5 metres high, open right through the cliff far above the city. On damp days cloud can drift into the arch and pour out of the far side. Locals call this the gate breathing mist. Climb to the top of the steps, stand inside the arch and look back. The stairs fall away beneath your feet.

The hole opened more than 1,700 years ago, when part of the cliff fell away. The ruler of the day took it as a good omen and named the mountain Tianmen, Heaven's Gate. It rises more than 1,300 metres above Zhangjiajie city, only 8 kilometres away, so close that its cable car sets off from the city streets. The top comes as a surprise, flat and wooded, with old trees, hanging vines and moss. On summer days it stays around 26°C while the city sweats above 30°C.

Tianmen is one mountain seen up close, where the Forest Park is a whole crowd of pillars seen from the rim. Almost everything worth seeing here sits at a cliff edge: the arch, a path pinned along a sheer rock face, and walkways with glass floors. Cable cars, buses and escalators do most of the climbing for you. What they cannot take away is the drop beneath your feet, and that drop is the reason to come. Give the mountain a day of its own.

Don't miss

  • The 999 steps to Heaven's Gate

The climb is steep, slow work. Stop now and then to catch your breath, and watch the arch grow larger overhead. Escalators beside the stairs carry anyone who would rather ride, though the ride up costs extra.

  • The Ghost Valley cliff path

This path runs about 1.6 kilometres along the middle of a sheer cliff, roughly 1,400 metres up. Rock rises above you, and below there is only air.

  • The glass walkway on Coiling Dragon Cliff

Step onto this 100-metre glass walkway and look straight down. Far below, the mountain road coils back and forth through its 99 bends. Glass sections close for repairs from time to time, so check before you go.

Fitting it in

Time to give it
Give it a full day from Zhangjiajie city, with time for queues at each stage of the way up and down. The routes up change with cable-car works and the weather, so read our route guide before you book. Keep a train or flight off the same day if you can.
When to go
Go on the clearest day you have, because in thick fog you may see little beyond the railings. After rain, watch the arch for drifting cloud. In summer the top is cool. From late December to early February thick white frost coats the summit trees, though ice and fog can change the route up. Avoid Chinese national holidays, when the queues are longest.
Pair it with
Back in the city after dark, 72 Wonder Tower lights up. The 110-metre tower is built to look like the wooden stilt houses of the local Tujia people. A great square hole runs through its middle, a nod to Tianmen Cave, and there is a food market in its grounds. In season, Tianmen Fox Fairy, an outdoor musical staged in a canyon of the mountain, is the other evening choice. Pick one only if your legs allow. Leave the Forest Park and the glass bridge for other days.
Who can skip it
With only one day in Zhangjiajie, spend it in the Forest Park, whose pillars make Zhangjiajie unlike anywhere else, and save Tianmen for a second day. People uneasy with heights may find much of it hard going, since the best parts are cliff-edge paths, glass floors and steep stairs. If fog closes in on your day, swap it for a boat on Baofeng Lake near Wulingyuan.

Questions travellers ask

Is Tianmen Mountain worth visiting?

Yes, for the arch and the cliff walks. Tianmen Cave is a natural hole 131.5 metres high right through the mountain, reached by 999 steps or by escalator. The cliff paths run along sheer rock about 1,400 metres up. Give it a full day and pick a clear one, because in thick fog you will see little.

Tianmen Mountain or Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: which should I choose?

Choose the Forest Park if you have only one day: its sandstone pillars are what make Zhangjiajie unlike anywhere else. Tianmen, 8 kilometres from the city, is one mountain seen up close, with a giant arch, cliff walkways and a forest on top. With two days, do both, on separate days.

How long do you need at Tianmen Mountain?

Plan on a full day from Zhangjiajie city. The way up and down comes in stages, with a queue at each. The arch, a cliff walk and the summit forest then take a few hours more. Keep a train or flight off the same day, or leave a generous margin.

Is the Tianmen glass skywalk the same as the Zhangjiajie glass bridge?

No, they are different places. Tianmen's glass walkways are short glass-floored sections fixed to cliffs high on the mountain, such as the 100-metre one on Coiling Dragon Cliff. The glass bridge, about 430 metres long, crosses a canyon at the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, about an hour from the city by road. Each needs its own ticket and its own day.

When is the best time to visit Tianmen Mountain?

On a clear day in spring or autumn. Summer is cool on top, around 26°C when the city is above 30°C, and from late December to early February frost coats the summit trees white. Fog and ice can hide the views or change the way up, so keep the day flexible and avoid national holidays.
