Zhangjiajie: sandstone pillars in the clouds, over four or five nights

Walk out to the rim at Yuanjiajie and the ground drops away. Hundreds of sandstone pillars rise sheer from the forest below, pines clinging to their tops. Then go down to Golden Whip Stream and walk the valley floor, looking up at them. On another day, climb Tianmen Mountain's 999 steps into a hole right through the cliff. The Forest Park deserves two days and Tianmen one. Four nights give you those three full days; five leave a spare one in case fog hides the view.

Tall grey and tan sandstone pillars capped with trees, with white mist drifting between them, in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
After rain, cloud lifts out of the valleys and drifts between the pillars, so whole columns fade and come back as you watch. Try for a morning like this at the rim of Yuanjiajie or Tianzi Mountain.

Four city decisions

Understand the city, then plan the details.

How many nights, which area to stay in, how to arrive and leave, where to go next. How to book each part is in Travel Advice.

Time

Four or five nights give you three or four full days.

Arrival and departure days mostly go to travel. Three full days give the Forest Park two and Tianmen Mountain one; with only two, either the park shrinks to a day or Tianmen drops out. A fourth day lets you wait out fog, slow down or see the glass bridge at the Grand Canyon.

Stay base

Stay in Wulingyuan, just outside the Forest Park's East Gate.

You wake up beside the park and can be through the gate early on both park days. The airport, the station and Tianmen are all by the city, so sleep there after a late arrival, before an early departure or for your Tianmen day. Switch hotels only when the drive you save is worth packing up again.

Gateways

Both DYG airport and Zhangjiajie West station are by the city.

Neither is at the park, so once you land or step off the train there is still a drive out to Wulingyuan. Arriving late? Sleep in the city and go out in the morning. Have your hotel's name and address in Chinese ready, and ride only in a licensed car.

Next place

After the mountains, spend a night in Fenghuang's old town.

Getting there is a journey of its own, so it won't work as a quick evening trip. Arrive for the evening, stay the night and walk the old town again the next morning. Heading to Beijing or Shanghai instead? Compare flights and trains by the whole door-to-door journey.

Zhangjiajie's sights sit in three areas

NSWE12345678
  1. Zhangjiajie cityNear Tianmen; easy after a late arrival
  2. WulingyuanBy the East Gate; stay here for the park
  3. YuanjiajieThe stone bridge and the Avatar pillar
  4. Tianzi MountainThe widest view over the pillars
  5. Tianmen MountainThe arch and cliff paths; a whole day
  6. Grand CanyonThe glass bridge, then down to waterfalls
  7. DYG airportBy the city; a drive from the park
  8. Zhangjiajie WestHigh-speed trains, by the city
  • Zhangjiajie city
  • Half a day or more
  • A day of its own
  • Airport and station

Not to scale. Tianmen, the Forest Park and the Grand Canyon lie apart, so give each its own day. The airport and station are by the city.

Why Zhangjiajie looks like nowhere else in China

Zhangjiajie is a forest made of stone. Thousands of sandstone pillars rise from wooded valleys, many of them taller than a 60-storey tower. You can walk across a natural stone bridge more than 300 metres above the valley, and on a misty day see why one pillar was renamed after the film Avatar. Around early November the slopes of Tianzi Mountain usually turn red and gold. On damp days, cloud drifts into the great arch on Tianmen Mountain and pours out of the far side.

Zhangjiajie is a long way from Beijing or Shanghai, by air or by rail, so give it time. If you are fitting it in between the two, count only the days you will spend in the mountains. The flight or train in, the drive out to Wulingyuan and any change of hotel come on top. On a very short China trip, come only if these pillars are what you most want to see. Keep a spare day if you can, so one foggy day doesn't cost you the views.
