A Chengdu–Chongqing–Zhangjiajie itinerary works best as an 11–12-day trip, with 12 days for the version below. It moves from pandas and teahouses to Chongqing’s river city, then into Wulong’s karst landscapes and Zhangjiajie’s forest pillars. This example keeps three proper days around Chengdu, an overnight in Wulong, a full Forest Park day and a Tianmen Mountain day. Two separate days belong to the journeys between cities.
A 12-day itinerary, with every overnight accounted for
The Chengdu nights are Days 1–4. Stay in Chongqing on Days 5, 6 and 8, with Wulong on Day 7. The Zhangjiajie base covers Days 9–11. Day 12 is departure only. Returning from Wulong to Chongqing protects the next transfer and follows the local route described here.
- Day 1 — Arrive in Chengdu; transfer, check in and settle in. Overnight: Chengdu.
- Day 2 — Early Panda Base visit, then People’s Park and its teahouses. Overnight: Chengdu.
- Day 3 — Give Sanxingdui Museum the main part of the day. Overnight: Chengdu.
- Day 4 — Dujiangyan’s waterworks and Guanxian Ancient Town; return to Chengdu. Overnight: Chengdu.
- Day 5 — Transfer day: Chengdu hotel → rail journey → Chongqing hotel. Overnight: Chongqing.
- Day 6 — Liziba and river-city viewpoints; the confirmed museum or Hongya Cave exterior option. Overnight: Chongqing.
- Day 7 — Travel to Wulong, visit the Three Natural Bridges and stay overnight. Overnight: Wulong.
- Day 8 — Fairy Mountain or Furong Cave, then return by road to Chongqing. Overnight: Chongqing.
- Day 9 — Transfer day: Chongqing hotel → rail journey → Zhangjiajie; evening at 72 Wonder Tower. Overnight: Zhangjiajie villa or 4-star hotel.
- Day 10 — Forest Park full day: Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie, Yuanjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and Ten-Mile Gallery. Overnight: Same base.
- Day 11 — Tianmen Mountain, or Baofeng Lake in bad weather. Overnight: Same base.
- Day 12 — Breakfast, checkout and the confirmed airport or railway-station transfer.
Chengdu: pandas, ancient Sichuan and time for tea
Chengdu earns four nights because its three touring days have different moods. The panda morning leads back into everyday city life at People’s Park. Sanxingdui gets a day centred on the museum rather than a rushed stop between distant sights. Dujiangyan adds waterworks and an old-town walk before one last night in the same Chengdu hotel. Keeping that base means unpacking once while still seeing beyond the city.
Questions about this three-stop route
How many days do I need for Chengdu, Chongqing and Zhangjiajie?
Eleven to twelve days, with twelve for the version described in this guide. It moves from pandas and teahouses to Chongqing's river city, then into Wulong's karst landscapes and Zhangjiajie's forest pillars. The example keeps three proper days around Chengdu, an overnight in Wulong, a full Forest Park day and a Tianmen Mountain day, and two separate days belong to the journeys between cities.
How many nights do we spend in each place?
Four nights in Chengdu, four nights between Chongqing and Wulong, and three nights at one Zhangjiajie base. That is 12 calendar days and 11 nights, and the count already includes the arrival day, the departure day and both intercity moves, so nothing extra has to be added later for travelling time.
How do I travel between Chongqing and Zhangjiajie?
By rail: the operating Chongqing–Zhangjiajie corridor is what makes this sequence possible. Choose available trains for your dates, then build the hotel transfers around the exact station names — Chongqing East, North, West and Shapingba are different places. Checkout, station access, security, luggage and the next hotel still take time, even when the train ride looks short.
Can Wulong be done as a day trip from Chongqing?
No — this itinerary treats it as a two-day mountain chapter with one night. You visit the Three Natural Bridges and sleep in the Fairy Mountain resort area; the next day holds either Fairy Mountain or Furong Cave, not both, and then returns to Chongqing for the night. The standard Three Natural Bridges access here includes the official transfer bus and Tianlong elevator.
Does the Zhangjiajie section include Tianmen Mountain or the Glass Bridge?
Tianmen Mountain, yes; the Glass Bridge, no. Day 11 rides the cable car up Tianmen Mountain, and if the mountain is closed or fogged in, the day switches to a boat on Baofeng Lake at no extra charge. The English-speaking guide accompanies all of Day 10 and the daytime on Day 11, while the 72 Wonder Tower evening is self-guided, with private drop-off, pickup and remote assistance.
How much walking do the two Zhangjiajie days involve?
Day 10 is the long one: allow roughly 10–11 hours door to door in the Forest Park, from Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie and Yuanjiajie down to Golden Whip Stream and Ten-Mile Gallery. Scenic shuttles are included; the Bailong Elevator, cableways and the Ten-Mile Gallery mini-train are optional and paid on the spot if you want to walk less. Day 11 is easier, with the cable car up Tianmen Mountain.
Chongqing and Wulong: give the city and mountains their own days
Chongqing supplies the sharpest change of scene: rail, bridges and river views layered above one another. Use Day 6 for the city rather than chasing every famous viewpoint on arrival. The local plan includes Liziba, with its access subject to current works, and a confirmed museum or Hongya Cave exterior option. An unhurried meal or evening river view can be enough after that.
Wulong then becomes a two-day mountain chapter. Visit the Three Natural Bridges and sleep in the Fairy Mountain resort area; the next day holds either Fairy Mountain or Furong Cave, not both. Return to Chongqing that night. The Wulong visit follows its confirmed attraction access, including the standard official transfer bus and Tianlong elevator; the forest segment’s no-elevator rule does not apply to this stop.
Zhangjiajie: the Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain from one base
This version finishes with the Zhangjiajie private route: three nights in one villa or 4-star hotel, 72 Wonder Tower lit up on arrival, a full Forest Park day, then Tianmen Mountain. The Forest Park day links Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie and Yuanjiajie by scenic shuttle before heading down to Golden Whip Stream and Ten-Mile Gallery. Allow roughly 10–11 hours door to door.
Day 11 rides the cable car up Tianmen Mountain. If the mountain is closed or fogged in, the day switches to a boat on Baofeng Lake at no extra charge; the Glass Bridge is not included. The English-speaking guide accompanies all of Day 10 and the daytime on Day 11. The tower evening is self-guided, with private drop-off, pickup and remote assistance.
Keep Days 5 and 9 as real transfer days
Chengdu and Chongqing already have rail connections, and the operating Chongqing–Zhangjiajie corridor makes this sequence possible. Choose available trains for your dates, then build the hotel transfers around the exact station names. Chongqing East, North, West and Shapingba are different places. Checkout, station access, security, luggage and the next hotel still take time, even when the train ride looks short.
Use current 12306 services rather than a railway-construction headline to plan the journey. The new Chengdu–Chongqing Central Line was still under construction in the official August 2026 report. For ticketing and boarding, use the passenger identity details and original valid document required by China Railway. Keep both move-day evenings flexible.
Start in Chengdu or Zhangjiajie? Let the flights decide
The order shown builds from city days toward the forest. Reverse the city sequence if flights into Zhangjiajie and out of Chengdu work better for your dates. Rebuild the transfer days around those flights while keeping each local itinerary in its confirmed order. A better arrival time or a protected international connection matters more than following an arrow on a map; a required return to the same airport needs extra travel time.
What changes with 10 or 11 days?
For 11 days, one option is to remove the Dujiangyan excursion, leave Chengdu a day earlier and keep the rest of the sequence. That is a revised Chengdu stay, not the unchanged five-day product. For 10 days, the clearest reduction is to omit the whole Wulong extension: keep Chengdu’s three touring days, one Chongqing city day and both forest days, with the two transfers still protected.
Keeping Wulong within 10 days requires bigger choices, such as dropping a Chengdu excursion and Chongqing’s full city day. Rework the nights and connections before booking. Do not simply add Wulong to a transfer day or assume a late train creates another full sightseeing day.
Choose this route for variety, with an active finish
This suits travellers who want city life, museums and two different mountain landscapes in one journey, and who are comfortable with early starts and sustained walking. Twelve days preserves the listed visits, but it is not a generous weather or recovery buffer. If your group wants slower mornings or finds long walks difficult, shorten the route or discuss a different local arrangement before committing.
The three linked tours show local stays and services. Their shared departure and arrival days explain the 12-day calendar; they do not create a priced through-tour. This combination, intercity tickets, local handovers and any changes need separate written confirmation. Do not add the three starting prices or assume one guide stays with you throughout.
