A Chengdu and Zhangjiajie itinerary works well in 7 days and 6 nights if your priorities are pandas, a little Sichuan culture and two full days in the forest park. Spend three nights in Chengdu and three in Wulingyuan, with a transfer day between them. Add an eighth day for Tianmen Mountain. You can travel between the two destinations without adding a Chongqing hotel stay.
Start with your arrival and departure cities
This plan starts in Chengdu and finishes in Zhangjiajie. It suits a wider China trip or flights that allow you to arrive at one end and leave from the other. Starting in Zhangjiajie also works: reverse the hotel blocks and put Chengdu’s city day after the forest walks. Choose the direction using the flights and onward journeys you can actually book, rather than a rule that pandas must come first.
Chengdu to Zhangjiajie: look for a direct train first
Search Chengdu East (成都东) to Zhangjiajie West (张家界西). A January 2026 railway announcement confirmed a direct service on this route. Check your own date on 12306 for the current trains, duration and seats; the published launch timetable is not a promise of today’s departure time. A train passing through the Chongqing region does not mean you need to get off and stay there.
Choose a departure that leaves a comfortable station-to-hotel journey at the far end. An early train may give you a relaxed Wulingyuan evening; a late train may put hotel arrival close to bedtime. For either one, keep the transfer day free of timed attraction tickets. Confirm the hotel’s late check-in arrangements if needed, and keep its Chinese address available offline.
Compare flights only after checking the airport and the whole journey. Chengdu has Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU); Zhangjiajie’s airport code is DYG. Check whether a flight on your date is nonstop or involves a connection. Add travel to the airport, check-in, baggage collection and the trip to Wulingyuan before deciding it saves time. A short flight on paper can still consume most of this day.
7 days in Chengdu and Zhangjiajie
Day 1 — Arrive in Chengdu
Check in and keep the evening near your hotel. Choose a central base where meals and a gentle neighbourhood walk are easy, rather than changing hotels for each attraction. A riverside stroll or a teahouse can wait until you have rested. This is Chengdu night 1 of 3.
Day 2 — Pandas, then an easy Chengdu afternoon
Choose the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for this city-based plan. Pick the correct entrance and current transport using the base’s official visitor information. Leave the afternoon for a teahouse, a park or one neighbourhood. Dujiangyan Panda Valley is a different venue; choosing it changes the day’s travel, so do not book one place while navigating to the other. Stay in Chengdu.
Day 3 — Choose Sanxingdui or Dujiangyan
Choose Sanxingdui for archaeology and ancient Shu objects, with a confirmed museum reservation and travel both ways. Choose Dujiangyan for the historic irrigation landscape and time outdoors. Trying to include both makes the third day much more about transport. You can also stay in Chengdu for temples, parks and food if that is closer to the trip you want. Return to the same hotel for Chengdu night 3.
Day 4 — Train to Zhangjiajie, then Wulingyuan
Check out, reach Chengdu East and take your confirmed train to Zhangjiajie West. Continue to your Wulingyuan hotel; the railway station is not a forest-park entrance. Keep dinner and check-in as the only evening commitments. Arrange the next morning’s gate and departure point with the hotel or guide. This is Wulingyuan night 1 of 3.
Day 5 — Forest-park viewpoints
Make Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain the main viewpoint plan if the booked route, operating transport and your walking pace allow. These are in the Wulingyuan scenic area. Decide how you will reach and leave the upper areas before starting; a list of viewpoint names does not account for queues, park buses or mountain transport. Keep pauses for lunch and photos. Stay in Wulingyuan.
Day 6 — A valley walk and room to adjust
Use the second forest day for a Golden Whip Stream walk or a part of the park missed yesterday. Choose a section and turnaround point that suit your knees, weather and onward transport rather than treating every trail as compulsory. Two days also let you adjust the order when conditions change, although they cannot guarantee clear views. Return to the same Wulingyuan hotel for night 3.
Day 7 — Leave Zhangjiajie
Leave time for checkout and the road journey to the exact station or airport on your ticket. Keep a morning with an early departure free of sightseeing. If that departure requires a very early drive from Wulingyuan, move night 6 to Zhangjiajie city instead: the total remains six nights, with Chengdu three, Wulingyuan two and the city one.
What changes with 8 or 9 days?
With 8 days and 7 nights, keep Chengdu nights 1–3 and Wulingyuan nights 4–6, then use day 7 for Tianmen Mountain and sleep in Zhangjiajie city that night. Depart on day 8. Transfer from Wulingyuan with enough time for your booked entry slot and confirm luggage storage before visiting. Tianmen is a separate attraction and ticket from the forest park; the Glass Bridge is another separate outing, not automatically part of this day.
For 9 days and 8 nights, add a Chengdu day before the train: Chengdu nights 1–4, Wulingyuan nights 5–7 and Zhangjiajie city night 8. That gives you space for the second Sichuan outing or simply more rest, before two forest days and Tianmen. If Chongqing’s city sights are a priority, use the longer three-city itinerary instead of squeezing another hotel stop into these same days.
Choose hotels around the days, not just the city name
In Chengdu, prioritise a comfortable city base with straightforward station and attraction access. For the forest days, choose Wulingyuan accommodation against the entrance you plan to use; “Zhangjiajie” in a hotel name does not place it beside that gate. Keep large luggage at the same hotel on both forest days. Only add a city hotel when Tianmen or your departure makes the move useful.
Book the connections, then fill the days
Start with entry and exit transport, then confirm the intercity journey and the matching hotel nights. Reserve attractions for the right dates, identities and entry options. This is a travel-planning outline, not an inclusive package quotation. If you want local help, use the private-tour collection to compare the available Chengdu and Zhangjiajie arrangements and ask about joining the two stays into your own trip.
Questions travellers ask before booking
How many days do I need for Chengdu and Zhangjiajie?
Seven days and six nights, if your priorities are pandas, a little Sichuan culture and two full days in the forest park. Spend three nights in Chengdu and three in Wulingyuan with a transfer day between them, remembering that day 1 is arrival and day 7 is departure. Add an eighth day for Tianmen Mountain. You can travel between the two destinations without a Chongqing hotel stay.
Do I have to start in Chengdu, or can I go to Zhangjiajie first?
Either order works. This plan runs Chengdu in and Zhangjiajie out, which suits a longer trip inside China or flights that already open and close at those two ends. Reversed, you sleep in Wulingyuan first and keep the easy city day for after the walking. Let the transport you can actually book decide, not the idea that pandas come first.
Is there a direct train from Chengdu to Zhangjiajie?
Yes, on the Chengdu East (成都东) to Zhangjiajie West (张家界西) route: a January 2026 railway announcement confirmed a direct service between the two stations. Check your own date on 12306 for the current trains, duration and seats, because the published launch timetable is not today's departure time. A train passing through the Chongqing region does not mean you need to get off and stay there.
Is flying faster than the train?
Not necessarily. Compare flights only after checking the airport and the whole journey: Chengdu has Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU), Zhangjiajie's airport code is DYG, and your date may be nonstop or a connection. Add travel to the airport, check-in, baggage collection and the trip to Wulingyuan. A short flight on paper can still consume most of this day.
Where should I sleep for the two forest-park days?
In Wulingyuan, choosing the hotel against the entrance you plan to use and keeping large luggage at that same hotel on both forest days. A hotel with Zhangjiajie in its name is not necessarily beside that gate. Only add a Zhangjiajie city hotel when Tianmen Mountain or your departure makes the move useful.
Is Tianmen Mountain included in the forest-park ticket?
No. Tianmen is a separate attraction and ticket from the forest park, and the Glass Bridge is another separate outing that is not automatically part of the same day. With 8 days and 7 nights, use day 7 for Tianmen, transfer from Wulingyuan with enough time for your booked entry slot, confirm luggage storage, and sleep in Zhangjiajie city.
