Build every real-name booking from the valid passport you will physically carry, but follow each provider's own field instructions. The correct display is not always identical across an airline, China Railway 12306, a hotel and an attraction. What must stay consistent is the underlying person, document type, document number and name source. If a system forces an unclear abbreviation, truncation or name order, stop and ask the responsible provider instead of guessing.
Create one private passport source record
Before opening any booking form, copy the identity fields from the passport information page into a private note. This is your comparison record, not a new spelling standard. If a booking uses another officially accepted document, such as a foreign permanent resident ID, create a separate record for that document and do not assume the passport can replace it at check-in.
- Document type and issuing country or authority.
- Every name label printed on the information page: Full Name, Surname, Given Names, First Name, Middle Name or Last Name, as applicable.
- The exact Latin-script spelling, sequence, spaces and punctuation shown in the visual inspection zone.
- Passport number, nationality, date of birth, sex when required and expiry date.
- A note of the machine-readable zone (MRZ) form for use only when an official platform tells you to consult it.
Map the passport to each booking channel
| Booking | Authoritative identity check | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Flight | The carrier's name fields and the valid ID used to buy the ticket | A 12306 name order is automatically correct for the airline |
| China Railway 12306 | 12306's foreign-passport entry rules and the original valid ID used for purchase | An airline's LAST/FIRST display should be copied into one railway field |
| Hotel | The valid passport or other accepted document presented for accommodation registration | A reservation nickname is enough for the legal check-in record |
| Attraction | The venue's current real-name booking and admission instructions | Every museum accepts the same name format or document |
| Third-party booking agent | The actual carrier, property or venue remains the final operational checker | The agent's accepted form guarantees boarding, check-in or admission |
Read the labels before deciding the name order
| Passport layout | 12306 entry approach | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|
| One Full Name field | Enter the Full Name content | The other provider insists on separate surname and given-name fields |
| Surname and Given Names | Enter Surname, one space, then Given Names | The printed labels or name components are unclear |
| First Name, Middle Name and Last Name | Enter those fields in their printed First–Middle–Last order with spaces | Another platform asks for family name first; follow that platform, not 12306 |
| A single name with no separate surname | Use the passport's Full Name under the 12306 rule | An airline or attraction makes both family-name and given-name fields mandatory |
| Names in more than one script | 12306 says to enter only the Latin letters A–Z or a–z | The Latin form is missing or differs across the visual and machine-readable zones |
Use the MRZ as instructed, not as a universal replacement name
The machine-readable zone is the two or three coded lines at the bottom of a passport information page. For foreign-passport verification, 12306 says the visual inspection zone is primary and the MRZ is auxiliary. Its guidance uses the MRZ to resolve separators such as hyphens, apostrophes and commas, with MRZ separators converted to spaces. Do not type angle brackets literally, and do not replace an airline's instructions with the 12306 rule.
Handle spaces, punctuation and long names deliberately
| Issue | Safe action | Unsafe shortcut |
|---|---|---|
| Spaces between name groups | Use the platform's written rule; 12306 requires one space between groups | Delete every space because a previous ticket displayed none |
| Hyphen, apostrophe or comma | Use the provider's guidance; 12306 directs users to the MRZ for these separators | Invent an unconfirmed spelling that removes or changes letters |
| Accents or non-Latin characters | Follow the provider's supported-character rule; 12306 accepts Latin letters for foreign-passport names | Create your own transliteration from pronunciation |
| Very long name | 12306 currently allows entry up to 64 characters and omits the excess; preserve evidence and escalate if identity is ambiguous | Choose which middle names to delete without an official rule |
| Merged or reordered display after issue | Compare all letters and the stored document details, then ask the provider when uncertain | Treat every cosmetic display change as safe—or as definitely invalid |
For flights, the operating carrier's rule controls the form
Chinese civil-aviation rules require check-in with a valid identity document consistent with the one used to buy the ticket, and the issued confirmation must show the passenger name. Airlines still define how surname, given names, middle names and supported characters are entered. Check both the marketing carrier and operating carrier on a codeshare, and review the issued ticket or itinerary immediately rather than trusting only the form you submitted.
- Select passport as the document type only if that is the document you will present.
- Read the airline's examples for surname or family name and given or first name before entering either field.
- Compare the issued passenger name, document type and document number with the passport source record.
- For a codeshare, confirm which carrier will check the document at the airport.
- If anything is wrong, contact the ticket issuer and operating airline before making a second booking or cancelling the first.
For 12306, follow its foreign-passport rule exactly
China Railway uses real-name ticketing. Foreign travelers can use valid passports supported by the system, must complete the required identity verification and must show the valid original ID used to purchase the ticket when entering, leaving and boarding. The official foreign-passport instruction page—not an airline ticket or hotel confirmation—is the source for the railway name field.
- Choose the correct passport document type and copy its number and expiry accurately.
- Enter the name according to the exact label pattern and 12306 rules above.
- Complete automatic, photo-upload or station verification when the account prompts for it.
- Before payment, compare the passenger record with the passport source record character by character.
- After purchase, retain the order details and carry the original valid passport used for that ticket.
Separate the hotel reservation name from the legal check-in identity
A reservation name helps the property find and hold the room. At check-in, foreign guests must present a valid passport, foreign permanent resident ID or another accepted document so the hotel can complete accommodation registration. If the person who paid, the reservation holder and the actual guest are different, add the guest's passport name through the booking channel and obtain the property's confirmation before arrival.
- Put every staying guest on the reservation when the booking channel allows it.
- Tell the property in advance if the displayed booking name is shortened, reordered or held under another traveler.
- Carry the original valid document for each guest; a screenshot of the passport is not the check-in document.
- Do not assume a successful online payment proves that the property can register the guest's document.
- Keep the property's written answer with the booking confirmation, especially for a late arrival.
For attractions, start over with the venue's own rule
Real-name attraction systems are not one national form. The Palace Museum, for example, asks international visitors for full name and passport number and requires the original valid ID used for the booking at admission. Another museum or scenic area may support different documents or field layouts. Read the current official ticket page for each venue and do not paste a shortened airline or 12306 display without checking.
Use a correction-first workflow across all bookings
- Create the passport source record and decide which physical document each booking will use.
- Open the official field instructions for that specific airline, 12306, property or attraction.
- Enter the data, then take a dated screenshot before payment when the form imposes unusual formatting.
- Inspect the issued ticket, passenger record or confirmation immediately after purchase.
- Classify any difference as either display formatting or an underlying identity mismatch; if you cannot prove which, escalate it.
- Keep the provider's written answer and carry the original valid document on the travel day.
Know which differences require action
| What you see | Likely category | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Same letters, but spaces removed or name groups visually joined | Possibly display formatting | Compare stored document details and ask the provider if its rule is not explicit |
| A letter missing, added or replaced | Possible identity mismatch | Contact the issuer before travel; do not self-correct the confirmation |
| Surname and given name put into the wrong required fields | Possible identity mismatch | Ask the responsible carrier or platform whether reissue is required |
| Wrong document type or passport number | Underlying document mismatch | Use the provider's official correction, refund or rebooking process |
| Name truncated under a documented platform limit | Platform-specific formatting | Keep the rule and input evidence; escalate if the resulting identity is not unambiguous |
| Nickname, married name or agent-created transliteration not on the travel document | Underlying name mismatch | Stop and obtain a provider-approved correction path |
If the passport is renewed or the legal name changes
A new passport number does not update existing bookings automatically, and official evidence of a name change does not itself rewrite a ticket. Keep the old and new document details and lawful evidence of the change, then contact every provider separately. Airlines, China Railway, hotels and attractions do not share one correction database or one rule.
- Flight: ask the ticket issuer and operating carrier whether the document number can be updated and whether any name difference requires correction or reissue.
- 12306: if the old passport is no longer a valid original document for travel, ask 12306 before departure; do not assume the new passport will open a ticket bought on the old number.
- Hotel: update the guest record and confirm that the property will register the new valid document at reception.
- Attraction: use the venue's modification, cancellation or new-booking procedure for the document tied to admission.
- Immigration status: if a visa or residence document is linked to the old passport, obtain separate advice from the responsible immigration authority; a booking correction does not repair entry permission.
Escalate anything the official rule does not answer
- A mononym forced into two mandatory airline fields.
- A surname or given-name label that is blank, unclear or inconsistent with the MRZ.
- A name longer than the platform limit where the remaining string could identify more than one person.
- An accent, punctuation mark or non-Latin name that the form rejects without offering an official conversion rule.
- A renewed, lost or damaged passport after a real-name ticket has been issued.
- Different answers from an agent and the operating carrier, hotel or venue.
If the mismatch remains on the travel day
- Arrive early with the original valid passport, booking record and any written support decision.
- Go to the operating airline desk, staffed 12306 window, hotel reception or official venue service desk—not an unofficial reseller.
- Explain the exact difference without altering a document or presenting someone else's identity.
- Ask for the authorized remedy and its cost before cancelling; for rail identity errors, expect the official refund-and-rebook rule and possible seat changes.
- If the provider cannot confirm acceptance, choose a lawful reissue or new booking rather than relying on a verbal guess at the gate.
Passport name questions before you book
Does my name have to look identical on my flight, train and hotel bookings?
They do not have to be identical. An airline, China Railway 12306, a hotel and an attraction can display the name differently, and each provider has its own field instructions to follow. What must stay consistent is the underlying person, document type, document number and name source, which is the valid passport you will physically carry.
How does 12306 want a foreign passport name entered?
Read the labels printed on the passport first. If it prints Surname and Given Names, enter Surname, one space, then Given Names. If it prints First Name, Middle Name and Last Name, enter them in that printed First–Middle–Last order with spaces. For foreign-passport names 12306 accepts the Latin letters A–Z or a–z. If another platform asks for family name first, follow that platform.
Can I correct a misspelled passenger name on a 12306 ticket?
No. 12306's current purchase FAQ says the passenger name cannot be changed after purchase. When the passenger identity information is wrong, the stated route is to refund and buy again, with the applicable refund fee. Changing the date or the train does not repair an identity error, so check the official process and current seats first.
My name is longer than the booking form allows. Which parts do I leave out?
Do not decide that yourself. 12306 currently lets you fill 64 characters and does not carry over the rest, so follow the platform's written limit and keep the rule and your entry as evidence. If the truncated result could point to more than one person, raise it with the provider instead of inventing a shorter spelling.
The hotel booking is not in my exact passport name. Can I still check in?
The reservation name and the legal check-in identity are two different things. The reservation name helps the property find and hold the room; at check-in, foreign guests must present a valid passport, foreign permanent resident ID or another accepted document for accommodation registration. If the payer, the booker and the actual guest differ, add the guest's passport name through the booking channel and ask the property before arrival.
I renewed my passport after booking. Do the bookings update automatically?
Nothing updates by itself. A new passport number does not reach existing bookings automatically, and official evidence of a name change does not rewrite a ticket on its own. Airlines, China Railway, hotels and attractions share neither one correction database nor one rule, so keep the old and new document details and lawful evidence of the change, then contact each provider separately.
