Pingyao Ancient City (平遥古城) in Shanxi is a walled county town founded in the 14th century and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. Walking its streets, eating and sleeping inside the walls need no ticket. To climb the wall and enter the old banks, the county government office and the temples you buy one pass: RMB 125, valid three days, covering 22 sights once each. High-speed trains stop at Pingyaogucheng station on the Datong–Xi’an line, south-west of the old city.

What is Pingyao Ancient City?

UNESCO describes it as an exceptionally well-preserved traditional Han Chinese city: walls, streets and lanes, shops, houses and temples that still form one complete town, with nearly 4,000 surviving shops and dwellings. From the 19th to the early 20th century Pingyao was the financial centre of the whole of China, and the grand courtyards of its banking houses are what you walk through today. The listing has three parts: everything inside the walls, Shuanglin Temple 6 km to the south-west and Zhenguo Temple 12 km to the north-east.
