Shanghai–Suzhou–Hangzhou–Nanjing: Chain or Use One Base?

Different gateways? Test Nanjing → Suzhou → Shanghai → Hangzhou, or reverse. Both flights via Shanghai? Compare one base with a two-base plan.

Original editorial illustration comparing a four-city Yangtze Delta chain with a central base.

If flights allow different gateways, a practical four-city chain is Nanjing → Suzhou → Shanghai → Hangzhou, or the reverse. If both long-haul flights use Shanghai, do not force a one-way label: use Shanghai as one base, add one strategic second base, or accept a return only after comparing complete door-to-door blocks. The right answer depends on airports, exact railway stations and what each city must deliver.

Choose the architecture first

One-way chain

Best when Nanjing and Hangzhou can sit near opposite gateways and every hotel move supports real local priorities.

Shanghai base

Best when hotel stability matters, excursions are focused and the repeated station approaches remain tolerable.

Two-base hybrid

Often strongest when one move removes the longest returns without creating four separate check-ins.

Only five or six days? Decide what to leave out

Two existing private routes show the trade-off
RouteStay and usable daysWhat the choice gives you
5-day Shanghai–SuzhouFour nights in the same Shanghai hotel; three full touring days between arrival and departureSuzhou as a day trip, plus Zhujiajiao and Shanghai Tower’s 118th floor. A Shanghai return without moving hotels; Hangzhou is outside this route.
6-day Shanghai–Suzhou–HangzhouShanghai 2 nights, Suzhou 1, Hangzhou 2; four guided touring days, including two intercity travel daysMore Suzhou time and Hangzhou’s lake, temple and tea stops, with two hotel changes and departure from Hangzhou. Zhujiajiao and Shanghai Tower admission are outside this route.

Choose the five-day route when staying in one hotel matters more than adding Hangzhou. Choose the six-day route when Hangzhou is a priority and you can finish there. It is a different itinerary, not the five-day tour with an extra day. Neither includes Nanjing; adding a fourth city, reversing the route or returning from Hangzhou to Shanghai needs a separately confirmed plan.

With a young child who needs a room nap, look closely at Days 3 and 4 of the six-day route. Both are hotel-change days, so a midday return to the room is not built in. Tell us the child's nap time and which visit you would skip first; we can check a lighter plan and confirm any price change in writing before booking. If one stable hotel matters more than Hangzhou, the five-day Shanghai–Suzhou route keeps all four nights in Shanghai.

For four or six people, count rooms and bags as well as days

Bags and city travelLeave the main bags at the Shanghai hotel for Suzhou. Four- and six-person groups still take second-class return rail, with private transfers at both ends.Bags move with the group. For four to nine people, a door-to-door vehicle is usually planned for city moves, but its capacity must be checked against the actual bags.

Questions travellers ask about the four-city order

What order should I visit Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou in?

Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, or the reverse, when flights allow different gateways. If both long-haul flights use Shanghai, do not force a one-way label: use Shanghai as one base, add one strategic second base, or accept a return only after comparing complete door-to-door blocks. Airports, exact railway stations and each city's job decide it.

Should Suzhou be a day visit or an overnight?

A day visit when the priorities are concentrated, the useful station matches the activity area and the fixed return does not cut the visit short. An overnight when early or late local time matters, priorities span more than one area, or the next forward train removes a return to Shanghai. Do not add a night just because Suzhou is famous.

If I have to drop a city, which one goes?

Cut the city with the weakest distinct purpose. Nanjing is often first when it is in the plan only because the rail segment looks short. Do not keep four names by reducing every city to an arrival evening and a rushed morning; each city that stays needs a purpose that survives the cut.

Is there just one Suzhou station?

No. Suzhou, Suzhou North and the newer southern-corridor stations are not interchangeable. Suzhou's transport authority records Suzhou South and Shengze opening with the Shanghai–Suzhou–Huzhou line, which adds route options beyond the familiar central and northern names. Write the exact station beside the hotel and the activity, then search that exact station pair on 12306.

Both my flights use Shanghai. Does that force a return trip?

Not necessarily. Test the Shanghai base and the two-base hybrid on the same door-to-door ledger before accepting repeated rail commutes or a final return to the airport. Two bases often capture most of the geographical gain with one move and without four check-ins. If the final return to Shanghai looks fragile, compare open-jaw gateways or a final Shanghai night.

Can I book a timed ticket for the afternoon I change cities?

Keep move-day arrivals free of an irreplaceable timed highlight. A checkout, a luggage transfer, a station approach and a possible delay all sit in front of it, and a day visit that loses half its time to station access leaves only the highest priority standing. Put the fixed booking on a day that does not start with a train.

Station geography can reverse the route

Shanghai's municipal guide lists several major and smaller railway stations spread across the city and tells travellers to confirm the exact station before departure. Suzhou's transport authority records the opening of Suzhou South and Shengze on the Shanghai–Suzhou–Huzhou line, adding more route possibilities beyond the familiar central and northern station names. These facts are why city-to-city labels are insufficient: search the exact service and station in 12306 for your date.

Give each city a distinct job

A city earns a base through activities, not name recognition
CityPossible route roleWhen not to add a hotel
ShanghaiInternational gateway, deep city base and connection pointA transit night adds a check-in but no useful city time
SuzhouFocused garden, canal, craft or museum priorities in a compact planOne protected visit works from another base and luggage would add more friction
HangzhouLake, tea-area or wider city priorities that benefit from local mornings and eveningsThe plan contains only one central activity easily reached as a focused visit
NanjingHistory, museums, city-wall or other dispersed priorities that merit a local baseIt is included only because the rail segment looks short

Suzhou: day visit or overnight?

  • Choose a day visit when the priorities are concentrated, the useful station matches the activity area and the fixed return does not cut the visit short.
  • Choose an overnight when early or late local time matters, priorities span more than one area, or the next forward train removes a return to Shanghai.
  • Write the exact Suzhou station beside the hotel and activity. Suzhou, Suzhou North and newer southern-corridor stations are not interchangeable.
  • If carrying luggage through a visit, confirm storage from a named provider. Do not build the route around assumed lockers.
  • Do not add an overnight just because Suzhou is famous; decide what you will actually see and how long it requires.

Build the four-city route in eight decisions

  1. Fix the actual arrival and departure airports before deciding a direction.
  2. Give every city one non-substitutable purpose and remove cities kept only for completeness.
  3. Search the exact station pairs in 12306; record station names, not just city names.
  4. For each city, compare a base with a focused visit using hotel-door to activity-door time.
  5. Count every checkout, luggage transfer, storage interval and repeated station approach.
  6. Test the one-way chain, Shanghai hub and two-base hybrid using the same complete ledger.
  7. Keep move-day arrivals free of an irreplaceable timed highlight.
  8. Choose the structure with fewer forced returns and fewer weak hotel changes, then assign nights.

When to choose another shape

Use a one-way chain when gateway geometry removes a return and each city merits local time. Use a Shanghai hub when the room stability outweighs complete commute blocks. Use two bases when it captures most of the geographical gain with one move. Cut the city with the weakest distinct purpose; do not keep four names by reducing every city to an arrival evening and rushed morning.

  • Actual airports and exact railway stations appear in the route.
  • Every city has a distinct purpose that survives cuts.
  • Suzhou day visit versus overnight is decided by activities and station geography.
  • All hotel moves and repeated station approaches are counted door to door.
  • Current 12306 services and named transport notices are rechecked.
