For a longer China stay, the choice is not ‘more space versus more service’. It is which daily tasks you want the property to absorb and which you are willing to manage yourself. A kitchen, washer or weekly rate has value only when the exact room, cleaning plan, contract and support still work on an ordinary Tuesday and when something breaks.
This comparison assumes both options are commercial accommodation. A privately managed residential rental has a different access and registration risk and belongs in the separate aparthotel-versus-rental guide. ‘Serviced apartment’ is not a nationwide promise of a fixed service level, so every benefit below needs unit-level confirmation.
| Need | Hotel usually starts stronger | Serviced apartment can win when verified |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Reception, luggage and replacement-room process | Staffed or documented check-in at your actual time |
| Sleep and room reset | Regular housekeeping and linen routines | Frequency is enough and you prefer privacy |
| Meals | Breakfast and nearby food support | Kitchen genuinely supports the meals you will make |
| Laundry | Paid hotel service | Private or convenient shared washer plus drying |
| Work and family space | Predictable room but limited separation | Real table, doors and usable living space |
| Failures | Duty manager and room inventory | Named support, maintenance deadline and alternative unit |
Let duration change the answer—but not by a rigid night count
Two nights rarely justify learning an apartment's appliances and stocking a kitchen. Over one or several weeks, breakfast, laundry and separate work or child-sleep space can remove repeated friction. Duration alone is not enough: a fourteen-night business trip with daily meetings may still suit a hotel, while a five-night family stay with a baby and food constraints may gain more from an apartment. Count the routines you will actually use.
| Situation | First option to test | Deciding evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Solo work trip with daily office schedule | Hotel or serviced apartment near the work address | Desk, quiet, invoice, breakfast and late support |
| Family with a baby or early bedtime | Serviced apartment | Real bedroom door, cot policy, washer and safe kitchen |
| Older parents or limited mobility | Whichever proves the complete step-free route | Curb, lift, shower, seating and short food access |
| Food allergy or dietary routine | Serviced apartment | Usable cooking equipment, fridge and grocery access |
| Moving cities every three or four nights | Hotel | Less unpacking, appliance learning and deposit administration |
| First arrival after a long flight | Hotel or serviced apartment with 24-hour staffed arrival | Not the room type—the failure-proof check-in |
A kitchen icon is not a working kitchen
| Check | Ask specifically | Why it changes value |
|---|---|---|
| Heat | Induction hob, microwave, oven or no cooking heat | A sink and kettle do not make dinner possible |
| Equipment | Pan, pot, knife, board, plates and cutlery | Buying a full set can erase the advantage |
| Cold storage | Fridge size and freezer compartment | Important for medicine, baby food or dietary needs |
| Ventilation and rules | Extraction, smoke alarm sensitivity and prohibited cooking | Strong-smell or high-heat cooking may not be allowed |
| Groceries | Practical shop and delivery access to the correct tower | A kitchen far from food is less useful |
Laundry is washer plus drying plus time
Confirm whether the machine is inside the assigned unit, shared by a floor or provided as a paid service. Ask about detergent, instructions, cycle length, dryer, drying rack and a legal place to hang clothes. A washer-dryer combination may handle small loads slowly. Families should plan the first laundry before the clean-clothes buffer disappears, not on the night before an early departure.
Write down what ‘serviced’ means
- Housekeeping frequency and whether weekends or public holidays differ.
- How often sheets and towels are changed, and how to request extras.
- Rubbish removal, dishwashing and replenishment of water or toiletries.
- Notice before staff entry and a do-not-disturb process.
- Maintenance contact, response window and what qualifies for a replacement unit.
- Breakfast venue and dates, if breakfast influences the comparison.
Check the money and stay rules as carefully as the room
| Term | Confirm before payment | Common surprise to prevent |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit | Amount, payment method, deductions and return timing | Refund delayed after international departure |
| Utilities | Included limits for electricity, water, heating and internet | A low headline rate with separate usage charges |
| Cancellation or early departure | Which nights become non-refundable | Work plans change but the whole stay remains charged |
| Guests | Visitor registration and maximum occupancy | Family or colleague cannot lawfully enter or stay |
| Invoice | Issuing entity, amount and required company details | Platform receipt is not the document an employer needs |
| Extension | Rate and room continuity | Extension requires a move to another unit |
Confirm hotel-style registration, not just a front desk
Hotels register foreign guests under National Immigration Administration rules. Accommodation outside hotels follows the separate registration requirement within 24 hours. The NIA online route is currently a pilot in Hebei, Liaoning, Zhejiang, Hubei, Guangxi, Chongqing and Sichuan; elsewhere, confirm the current local route. A desk in an apartment lobby does not by itself prove which model applies. Ask whether the operating entity treats the booking as hotel accommodation and who completes the registration for every passport.
Protect the arrival and departure days
Ask where a car can stop, which tower and lobby to use, whether reception is staffed at the actual arrival hour and how bags are stored before the unit is ready. At departure, confirm inspection, key return and deposit process before committing to an early train or flight. If an in-person inspection is required, schedule it rather than discovering it while the car waits.
| Problem | Ask the operator to do | Switch when |
|---|---|---|
| Washer or kitchen fails | Repair by a stated time or provide equivalent access | The facility was essential and no usable alternative exists |
| Cleaning is missed | Reschedule and provide fresh essentials | Repeated failure makes the longer stay unmanageable |
| Noise makes work or sleep impossible | Inspect and move to a proven quieter unit | Only an unverified promise is offered |
| Internet fails | Provide repair timing and a work fallback | Connectivity is mission-critical and no backup exists |
| Deposit terms change | Apply the written booking terms | Operator demands an undocumented payment before access |
National accommodation-registration guidance and the enterprise-information channel were reviewed on August 13, 2026. Property services, fees and individual operator status can change and must be confirmed in the booking terms. This guide does not certify a brand or building.
Questions to settle before booking
Should I choose a serviced apartment or a hotel for a long stay in China?
It depends on which daily tasks you want the property to absorb. Choose a hotel for a short stay, frequent city changes, dependable daily servicing or an arrival that must be simple. Choose a commercially operated serviced apartment when the stay is long enough to use a real kitchen, laundry and living space, and the operator has set out cleaning, utilities, deposits, guests, passport registration and after-hours help.
We are travelling with a small child. Is an apartment automatically easier?
Not automatically. For children or limited mobility, inspect balcony locks, low windows, internal steps, loose rugs, shower entry and whether every sleeping area has safe climate control. A compact hotel room with a lift, breakfast and immediate help can be easier than a large apartment in another tower.
The listing shows a kitchen. Is that enough?
No. Ask what heat the unit has: induction hob, microwave, oven or no cooking heat at all, because a sink and kettle do not make dinner possible. Then ask about pan, pot, knife, board, plates and cutlery, fridge size and freezer compartment, extraction, smoke-alarm sensitivity and prohibited cooking, and practical shop and delivery access to the correct tower.
What should I check about the deposit and the bill before I pay?
Confirm the deposit amount, payment method, deductions and return timing before you pay, because a refund can be delayed after you have left the country. Also confirm included limits for electricity, water, heating and internet, which nights become non-refundable, visitor registration and maximum occupancy, the invoice issuing entity, and whether an extension keeps the same room.
I land late at night. Should I still start in the apartment?
A split stay is often safer. Use a conventional hotel for the first night after a late international arrival, then move once during daylight after viewing the route and unit. Reverse the pattern before a very early flight if deposit inspection, tower access or road pickup could delay departure. One deliberate move can reduce more risk than insisting on one property.
