The Harbin Ice Festival is a winter season, not a single day. Its centrepiece, Harbin Ice and Snow World, opened between 17 and 21 December in each of the last three seasons and closed between mid- and late February. The festival’s official opening ceremony has been held on 5 January. As checked on 10 October 2026, the 2026–27 opening date and ticket prices have not been announced; last season’s standard adult ticket was RMB 328. Plan for late December to late January and give Harbin itself two or three days.

The three main ice and snow sites

“Harbin Ice Festival” is used for several separate attractions with their own tickets and dates. Most visitors see all three in two days: Ice and Snow World from afternoon into the evening, the snow sculptures on Sun Island in daylight, and the free ice lanterns in the city centre after dark.

How much are Harbin Ice Festival tickets?

  • Ice and Snow World, 2025–26: RMB 328 standard adult; RMB 298 during the opening week (17–23 December 2025).
  • Concession, RMB 240: children over 6 or taller than 1.2 m, full-time students aged 24 and under, and disabled visitors. The published rules name Chinese identity documents, so whether a foreign passport qualifies for a concession is not confirmed.
  • 2025–26 free admission: children 1.2 m or shorter or aged 6 and under with a paying adult, and visitors aged 65 and over. Eligible children did not need a reservation. Seniors needed their original Chinese ID card and an advance free-ticket reservation in the park’s official WeChat shop; whether a foreign passport qualifies for senior free admission is unconfirmed.
  • Booking with a foreign passport: a Xinhua release at the 2025–26 opening said foreign visitors can book with a passport and overseas payment. Book only through the park’s official channels or a platform you trust, in each traveller’s passport name.

Arrive before 14:00 if you can. The park’s own visiting advice is to enter early enough to see the ice in daylight and then stay for the lights after dark; the night view is the reason most people go. Official daily closing hours for the new season have not been published yet, and third-party sites disagree about them.

When is the best time to go?

Late December to late January is the safest window: all three sites have usually opened by the end of December, and the festival’s opening ceremony is on 5 January. February is a gamble rather than a plan. In the last three seasons Ice and Snow World closed on 15, 26 and 21 February, twice early because of warm weather, so do not schedule your only Harbin evening in the second half of February. Spring Festival also brings the biggest domestic crowds: the park’s record day last season was 19 February 2026, the third day of the New Year holiday, with about 121,000 visitors. In 2027, Lunar New Year falls on 6 February.

How cold is it, and what should you wear?

Average daily high and low in Harbin (WMO data supplied by the China Meteorological Administration)
MonthAverage highAverage low
December−9.8 °C (14.4 °F)−20.3 °C (−4.5 °F)
January−13.0 °C (8.6 °F)−24.6 °C (−12.3 °F)
February−8.5 °C (16.7 °F)−21.3 °C (−6.3 °F)
  • Dress for the evening, not the afternoon: you will be outside at Ice and Snow World after dark, when it is coldest.
  • Layer a thermal base, a warm mid-layer and a long down coat with a hood; add a hat that covers the ears, a scarf or neck gaiter, and mittens over thin liner gloves so you can use a phone.
  • Wear insulated, waterproof boots with a grippy sole and thick wool socks; ice paths are slippery.
  • Keep your phone in an inside pocket. Apple designs iPhones for 0–35 °C and says they may switch off in the cold; carry a power bank that meets China’s travel rules.
  • Plan short outdoor blocks with warm indoor breaks; a taxi between sites is cheap.

How to get to Harbin and to Ice and Snow World

  • From Beijing: the fastest high-speed trains take about 4 hours 33 minutes, usually from Beijing Chaoyang to Harbin West.
  • From Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB): about 39 km and 50 minutes by car to Ice and Snow World, according to the park.
  • From Harbin West Station: about 13 km and 30 minutes; from Harbin Station about 12 km and 25 minutes.
  • By metro: Line 2 has an “Ice and Snow World” station near the east ticket hall.
  • By taxi: the park lists about RMB 20 between Ice and Snow World and Central Street.

Can foreigners go to Harbin?

Yes. Harbin welcomes international visitors and the main sites are used to them. Check your entry route for the exact dates of your trip. China’s 30-day visa-free entry for passport holders of many countries, including South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, most EU countries, and the UK and Canada since 17 February 2026, currently runs until 31 December 2026; as checked on 10 October 2026, an extension into 2027 had not been announced (last year’s was announced on 3 November). Singapore and Malaysia have separate mutual 30-day arrangements. US travellers can use 240-hour visa-free transit at Harbin Taiping International Airport, the only eligible port in Heilongjiang, with a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region.

How many days do you need?

Two or three days cover Harbin well: one afternoon and evening at Ice and Snow World, a daylight visit to the Sun Island snow sculptures, and time for Central Street, Saint Sophia Cathedral and the free ice lanterns at night. Add a buffer day if your trip depends on Ice and Snow World, because the cold or a short-notice closure can change plans. Six to nine days lets you add China Snow Town, a ski day at Yabuli, Changbai Mountain or the Arctic village at Mohe.

Harbin Ice Festival questions

When does the Harbin Ice Festival 2026–27 start?

As checked on 10 October 2026, the 2026–27 dates have not been announced. In the last three seasons Ice and Snow World opened between 17 and 21 December, and the festival’s opening ceremony was on 5 January. The exact opening date was announced only about two days before opening last year.

How much are tickets to the Harbin Ice Festival?

Last season Ice and Snow World cost RMB 328 for a standard adult (RMB 298 in the opening week), the Sun Island Snow Sculpture Expo RMB 198, and the Zhaolin Park Ice Lantern Fair was free. 2026–27 prices have not been announced yet.

What is the best month to visit Harbin?

January, or the last week of December. All three main sites are usually open, and you avoid the late-season closures: Ice and Snow World has ended its season between 15 and 26 February, twice early because of warm weather.

Can foreigners go to Harbin?

Yes. Book attractions in your passport name, and check your entry route for your dates: the 30-day visa-free list currently runs until 31 December 2026, while US travellers can use 240-hour visa-free transit at Harbin airport with an onward ticket to a third country.

Is the Harbin Ice Festival worth it?

Yes, if you plan for the cold. Last season’s Ice and Snow World covered about 1.2 million square metres and drew about 3.06 million visitors; seen after dark it is unlike anything else. It is less worth it on a single rushed evening in late February, when the weather can close it.

How many days do you need in Harbin?

Two to three days for Harbin itself. Add three to six more for China Snow Town, Yabuli or Changbai Mountain.
