Dunhuang (敦煌) is an oasis town in the far west of Gansu, on the old Silk Road. Visitors come for two things: the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987 with 492 decorated cave temples, and the dunes of Mingsha Mountain around Crescent Lake on the edge of town. Book Mogao first: daily numbers are capped and the visit is a timed, guided sequence. Mingsha Mountain is listed at RMB 110. Stay two nights, or three if you add the desert sights west of town.

Book the Mogao Caves first

  • Two ticket modes: the Dunhuang Academy’s 2026 notice sets normal visits at 6,000 a day, with a digital film and eight caves, and emergency visits at 12,000 a day, with four caves.
  • Start at the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Center (莫高窟数字展示中心), not at the cliff. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your slot.
  • Foreign passports book through the official WeChat service account 莫高窟参观预约网.
  • Hours in 2026: 1 April–30 November 08:00–18:00, last admission 16:10; 1 December–31 March 09:00–17:00, last admission 15:10.
  • A July 2026 guide lists the emergency ticket at RMB 100. Our separate Mogao guide covers the whole sequence.

Getting there: three stations with similar names

Rail tickets to “Dunhuang” can mean three different stations: Dunhuang (敦煌), Liuyuan South (柳园南) and Liuyuan (柳园). The railway’s own booking system files all three under Jiuquan, so a search by city name does not separate them. Read the station name on the ticket before you arrange a transfer, and see our Silk Road route guide for the legs from Xi’an and Lanzhou. Dunhuang also has an airport.

How many days in Dunhuang

  • Two nights: Mogao on one day, Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake at sunset on another, with the night market in between.
  • Three nights: add the west line to Yumen Pass and the Yardang park. It is a full day; the park is 180 km from town.
  • Keep the Mogao day flexible. The caves can close for weather, so do not book a fixed flight straight after your slot.
